Directions
Investigate local or national disasters that have occurred within the last 5 years. These can be related to climate emergencies, such as flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, wildfire, or volcanos. Other types could be related to terrorism, bioterrorism, accidents, biological or chemical agents, disease outbreaks such as an infectious disease pandemic, foodborne terrorism, or active shooter with mass casualty preparedness.
Select one disaster and evaluate the emergency response that occurred for that event. Refer to topic Resources for additional information regarding different types of emergency response plans for local and national disasters.
Create an 8-10-slide PowerPoint presentation discussing the local or national disaster you selected and evaluate the emergence response. Create speaker notes of 100-250 words for each slide.
For the presentation of your PowerPoint, use Loom to create a voice-over or a video. Refer to the topic Resources for additional guidance on recording your presentation with Loom. Include an additional slide for the title and Loom link at the beginning and an additional slide for References at the end.
Include the following in your presentation
Describe the event and explain how it impacted the local or broader community.
Discuss the emergency response measures that were taken in responding to the event. Evaluate whether the emergency response measures created an appropriate, timely, and effective response.
Provide examples and rationale.
Explain how emergency response efforts included marginalized communities. Discuss whether decision making during this time considered diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Discuss how the principles of a Christian worldview can be applied to ensure inclusion of marginalized communities in emergency response preparation and response.
Based on your evaluation, what could have been done differently or what could be done differently in the future? How could these suggestions be applied to a similar event?
Discuss the role of the DNP-prepared nurse when responding to this type of crisis as an emergency responder. How would you lead with moral courage in the emergency response? How would you prioritize and target critical resources to those who need them the most?

Introduction
- Disasters have adverse population impacts
- Effective disaster response crucial for population health
- Response measures should promote inclusivity
- Presentation examines Hurricane Ian
Disasters are natural or man-made occurrences with adverse impacts on the population. The impacts include loss of lives, property, and animals. Disasters also displace people from their areas of residence.
Disasters require effective, responsive, and timely response interventions. The focus of the response measures should be to lessen disaster impact on the population and minimize further loss of lives, property, and animals.
Governments, including local, state, and national play crucial roles in disaster management. They adopt disaster response measures that not only address the disaster but also foster inclusivity. Therefore, this presentation focuses on Hurricane Ian, experienced in Florida this year.
Description and Impacts of Hurricane Ian
- Hurricane Ian hit Florida and South Carolina in September 2022
- Killed at least 146 people
- Power outages in communities
- Loss of homes and displaced populations
- Destroyed infrastructure
Hurricane Ian is a disaster that hit the state of Florida and South Caroline in September this year. The hurricane was a category disaster, considered the deadliest to hit Florida since the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935.
The hurricane originated from Central tropical Atlantic and western coast of Africa. The hurricane had severe impacts on the state of Florida and South Carolina. One of the impacts is the mortalities it caused. It is estimated that Hurricane Ian killed at least 146 people in Florida, 5 in Carolina, and 1 in Virginia.
The hurricane also caused catastrophic damage to the affected states. It is estimated that the damage from the hurricane was more than $50 billion. The damages could seen from the displacement of several people as their houses were submerged. The hurricane also caused massive power outages across the affected states.
The rise in water levels and strong winds caused numerous houses and infrastructure. Most of the roads in the severely affected regions were impassable. There was also an increased need for emergency medical care for the affected populations and supply of food and clean water (Deliso & Kekatos, 2022). Therefore, the impacts of Hurricane Ian were severe on the population.
Emergency Response Measures
- Florida Governor declares state of emergency
- Food distributed to affected populations
- Debris removed in safe communities
- Linemen responded to power outages
- Recovery plan activated to respond to the disaster
The emergency response measures adopted in the affected states, in specific, Florida were timely, appropriate, and effective. First, the governor of Florida declared a state of emergency, which activated all the disaster management arms in responding to the disaster.
The declaration paved way for the activation of all the state resources to be used in reducing the impact of the disaster on the population. The governor also led the distribution of food to the affected populations in the state. The USAR teams with more than 1000 personnel were also sent on a door to door mission to check on the health and safety of the occupants.
The governor also opened nine fueling depot stations across the state to enhance the efficiency of the response measures. More than 42000 linemen were also deployed to respond to more than 585000 power outages in the state. The emergency medical services were also activated to offer victim recovery, first aid, and their transport to health facilities for further treatment.
There was also the activation of a disaster recovery plan to offer financial assistance to the affected communities. Public, private, and non-governmental organizations collaborated in donating resources to support disaster response and recovery activities (flgov.com, 2022).
